While I believe he was wrong to assert that steroids have no effect of baseball performance, the interesting take-home message for me was that other events (e.g. change in the baseball) may have had a more dramatic effects of things such as home-run hitting than steroids.

You are right - I am surprised that anyone can still believe that anabolic steroids do not enhance performance or if they do then it is sole attributable to the placebo effect.

Anecdotally, athletes between 1950 and 1990 "knew" that steroids improved performance in spite the lack of supporting scientific evidence. But I think the empirical evidence has finally caught up with the anecdotal evidence.

mr walker's assertions with regards to steroids and hgh are so off base that his analysis cannot be considered serious. he explains away the effects that PEDs have on pitchers by providing a link to a 2 year old article from the washington post that deals strictly with steroids and makes no mention of hgh or other next gen substances. his "proof" that steroids don't help pitchers comes in the form of "i-don't-think-so" comments from 2 people, when there are hundreds of experts who would provide a counter argument. he also relies heavily on opinions of a retired ecomincs professor. c'mon get into the 21st century already. walker actually talks about the placebo effect when it comes to steroids...this fellow is so behind the curve it's scary.
